RELIEF PRINTS (linoleum, woodblock) are created by carving away areas of a flat plate with gouges, chisels and knives. The cut areas are below the surface of the plate and will remain free of ink.

When the ink is rolled with a brayer onto the plate, the smooth surfaces carry the ink to the paper. The cut surfaces allow the white of the paper to show through. In the case of multi-block color relief prints, a registration jig is used to ensure that each plate is in the correct alignment with the paper to record the different colors.
